Though early, all indicators at this time point to the typcial “spring” market we experience in the Twin cities happening this fall. So what can a hesitant buyer do during this time to make sure they’re ready to jump into the market later this year? Do your research virtually and in-person, when appropriate and safe.
Here are eight home-buying elements you can begin exploring now from the comfort of your home and your vehicle:
1. Study your mortgage options. The first step to any home search is getting pre-approved. Know what you can afford, how much of that you actually want to spend, and what it will cost you to borrow that money. 2. Connect with a real estate agent! You don’t have to be ready to write an offer today to talk to us about your home search. 3. Explore the locations that interest you. Drive the routes between the your desired community and the other locations that matter to you (work, extended family, the cabin?).
4. If schools are important, look into the options in your desired locations. Most city websites offer links to public school districts and private schools that serve their community. Many districts and individual schools have social media accounts that offer a closer look into their programs and accolades.
5. Bring back the Sunday drive! Hop in the car and explore communities and neighborhoods. Do they offer what you want out of your new neighborhood? Where’s the nearest grocery store? Are there sidewalks and biking trails? Roll down the windows and listen. Can you hear the freeway or nearby industrial area?
6. Research area restaurants and order take-out. Many restaurants, though closed for dining in, are offering curbside pick-up. Then, head to a local park for a picnic! Pick up a cup of coffee or an ice cream and go for a walk to explore the parks and trails in the area.
7. Is a place of worship an important part of your new neighborhood? Many are offering virtual services during this time! Use Google Maps to find nearby places of worship and then look up their websites and social media pages. You’ll find lots of opportunities to watch virtual services and get to know the worship community.
8. Investigate the additional costs of moving. Will you hire professional movers? (Pssst . . . we’ve got a list of recommendations for you to investigate 😉 ) Will you buy new furniture to replace or add to what you already have?
