Getting your yard ready for October is important to keep everything healthy and thriving as the weather turns cooler. From your lawn to your flower beds, the care routine needs to include protection and organization.
Start by cleaning up everything, and keeping it clean. Clear away dead branches, dead annuals, leaves on the lawn, and any debris. Never let big piles of leaves sit on the grass, it blocks the sun, air and water. Either rake them up and use them as mulch on your flower beds, bag them, or simply mow over them to chop them into tiny pieces. When you mow your lawn at this time of year, mow taller so that the grass can absorb sunlight more easily. Continue to give your lawn a mow at least once a week, just to chop up the leaves. Remember
Next you’ll want to fertilize your lawn to protect it for the upcoming winter. Water well after application, or time your application before a rain storm, so that the nutrients have ample time to soak deep into the roots. Pro tip: Give your lawn at least one really good soaking a week in the fall to keep it healthy. If it rains once a week, you’re good!
Finally, your plant and flower beds can use a fresh layer of compost followed by a fresh layer of mulch to preserve the roots for winter weather. Add fall flowers and you’re all set!
