Optimize your windows this summer to make them last longer, improve their energy efficiency and plus up their style. If your windows are older, but you haven’t got the budget to replace them this year, try some of these easier upgrades to make the most of the windows you have.

Effective Energy Efficiency

Switch to cellular shades (also called honeycomb). Their design traps air, so they provide a barrier to help keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer. You can also install a layer of window insulation film, some of which can help block UV and heat as well. And don’t forget to check all your windows for air leaks, sealing gaps with caulk and adding weather stripping to the moveable parts of the windows.

Lighter, Brighter Tips & Tricks

Heavy curtains in the winter can be swapped for sheer curtains in the warm months to brighten up a room. In addition, you can hang mirrors directly across from windows to bounce the incoming natural light around the room. Don’t forget that you can lighten walls and ceilings with a fresh coat of paint as well.

Maintenance Musts

Clean window panes inside and out twice a year to keep them functioning and clear. Check the locks and tracks on moving window parts, and clean and lubricate these items so that each window operates properly. If moisture is collecting between layers, this indicates a failed seal which needs to be located and repaired
