Spring fever has fully set in! Though it’s not quite time to break out the windbreakers and rainboots, there are a few things you can do now to make the seasonal transition a little smoother and neater in the next month (or two).
Here are two things we’ve done at the Welter house to prepare:
We revamped our small mudroom to maximize storage and minimize mess. We pass through this room many times a day as we come and go from the house. It’s the drop zone for everyone’s stuff, our “command center” for the family calendar and notes, and our laundry room. Whether we need to stash winter hats and mittens or umbrellas and summer sandals, there’s now a place for everything so it doesn’t end up piled on the washer or thrown on the floor.
- The cubby system gives everyone a place for their seasonal accessories. I made reversible labels so we can switch out the contents with the seasons.
- The ledge above the washer and dryer keeps stuff from falling behind the machines and gives extra storage space, including a “junk” basket.
- Our dry-erase weekly calendar (which I’m not great about updating regularly) helps to keep us all on the same page. I added the cork strips to pin up important info like school lunch menus and birthday invitations.

Last summer and fall we made note of outdoor projects we’d like to complete this year. Knowing that contractors’ schedules book quickly for the warmer months, we’re scheduling projects now so that we can get the work done as early as possible and spend more time enjoying our yard! What’s on our list this year?
- Some serious tree grooming
- Adding concrete curbing to replace that ugly black plastic trim
- Replacing rotted wood on our deck and adding a bar rail like this:
